Is DENTSU Japanese Black Company? How about TOYOTA?

I’ve been always concerned about Black Companies in Japan. Unfortunately, there was another victim. She was still young but took her life due to overwork. She worked at Denstu (電通).

What is Dentsu?

Dentsu is the biggest advertising company in Japan. Its head office is located in Minato ward, Tokyo.

It also has offices in Kyoto, Gifu Prefecture and Mie Prefecture as well as abroad.

The company was established in 1901. In 1947, Hideo Yoshida was chosen as the 4th President and he made “10 strict rules” (鬼十則).

The 10 strict rules indicate what people need to do as Dentsu employees and one of them states: “once you engage in task, even if you are killed, don’t let go until you complete the task.”

Some argue that this rule killed the victim.

Dentsu has forced its employees to work hard and overtime to gain profits. The problem is that the company is too big and powerful to leak the real situations. That is, some employees may have tried to leak but company and even media hid the problems.

About Victim

Matsuri Takahashi just graduated from Tokyo University and started to work at Denstu in 2015. She was smart and hardworking.

She worked over 130 hours OVERTIME during October 2015. 130!! I cannot imagine how she could make that number.

It’s not regular working hours. OVERTIME already makes 130 hours. HOW?

Below is what she left on Twitter last year. It’s obvious she worked too hard and her mind and body were breaking down.

October 4, 2015

Victim
I lost all emotions. Just want to sleep.

October 21, 2015

Victim
 It’s 4am and I’m still working… My body is shaking… I cannot do this. I’ll die. Tired.

November 3, 2015

Victim
I don’t know if I’m working to live or living to work. That’s life.

November 10, 2015

Victim
I’m afraid of falling asleep because next day comes if I sleep.

December 9, 2015

Victim
I don’t want to work anymore. I only sleep 2 hours a day. It’s not enough.

December 25, 2015 She committed suicide.

Why She Didn’t Quit?

If you were she you might think “hey, why don’t you quit? Get a new job!”
I totally agree and she should have quit the company.

But she couldn’t. I guess she didn’t have the option.
She was a Tokyo University grad and very proud of her education and company.

She must have had hope and dream to work in Dentsu. Thus she had to keep working. She couldn’t stop. Because once she stops, people might think she is a loser. She didn’t want to be a loser.

Some say the reason she didn’t quit company is because she had to have “Dentsu” brand. It’s the biggest company in advertisement.

Previous Victim

There was another victim in 1991. He worked everyday until 4am or 5 am and commit suicide after 15 months he worked at Dentsu.

Some current employees hope that the company will change company rules and maximum hours of overtime. They work over 100 hours overtime and might be a next victim.

Summary

I hope many people read this and share with others because this kind of Black Company has to be eliminated.

The ideal is that the company admits their problems and fix right away.

In reality, it’s extremely difficult. Almost impossible. They hide and pretend nothing is happening.

Japanese government must try to eliminate Black Companies. They need to establish strong Bureau to check companies regularly in Japan. They don’t do anything until someone passes away. It’s too late.
