Do you know any famous Japanese in your country?

Some Japanese are famous in the U.S. but not in Japan. Others are famous in Japan but no one knows them outside Japan.

In this post, I’m going to introduce 8 Japanese who are famous in abroad.

 Who is Piko-Taro Again?

Piko-Taro is a Japanese singer-songwriter. He is probably the most famous Japanese right now (as of October 2016).

He is the pen pineapple apple pen guy! You can find more details here.

If you are from England, you probably know her as John Lennon’s widow. She is a singer and peace activist and lives in New York now.

She met John Lennon in London and they moved to New York after. Even after John Lennon was killed, Ono kept herself busy to contribute her arts and message to people.

 Hideo Nomo

He is probably famous in the U.S. as he played baseball in Major League Baseball (MLB). He played in Japanese team, the Kintetsu Buffaloes, between 1990 and 1994.

Then he joined the Los Angels Dodgers in 1995. He won the Rookie of the Year Award in 1995 and retired in 2008.

He is another baseball player and also called “Ichiro.” He started his international baseball career with Seattle Mariners in 2001. He then joined New York Yankees from 2012 to 2014 and Miami Marlins since 2015.

He holds a lot of records, such as “most at-bats by rookie” in 2001 and “most hits, two consecutive seasons” in 2003 and 2004.

 Akira Kurosawa

He was a Japanese filmmaker who passed away in 1998. His famous films are Rashomon, Seven Samurai and Ikiru (to live).

He won a lot of prizes not only in Japan but also outside Japan. He was chosen as one of the 20 most influential Asians by Time magazine in 1999.

 Hayao Miyazaki

He is a filmmaker and founder of Ghibli museum. He loved reading books and comic books when he was a child.

He started to work for cartoon at the beginning and debuted as a director of The Castle of Cagliostro in 1979.

He directed Laputa: Castle in the Sky, My Neighbour Totoro, Kiki’s Delivery Service, Spirited Away and more.

 Takeshi Kitano

He is famous as Beat Takeshi in Japan. Since he started his career as a comedian in Japan, many Japanese were surprised when he was recognized as a great filmmaker outside Japan.

He won a lot of prizes in Japan as well as outside Japan as a filmmaker. His movie features minimal camera movement, sudden violence and brief dialogue since he started to make a film in 1990.

 Haruki Murakami

If you like reading novels, you might know him. He is one of the famous writers from Japan. His novels have been translated into 50 different languages.

Japanese media and Murakami’s fans await Murakami’s Nobel Prize  every year. Unfortunately, he hasn’t received the prize yet.
