How Influenza Infects You? Causes and How to Deal with Flu Virus

Flu season is around corner! This post explains what Flu is and how to deal with it.

What is Flu?

Flu or influenza virus infects the nose, throat and lungs. It spreads when contagious people cough or sneeze. Even when they talk, it spreads and you might be infected.

Most healthy adults may be contagious for about a week. That is, they may infect others up to 7 days after their symptoms develop.

The Flu or Influenza patients usually develop flu symptoms in the end of November every year. The number of patients rapidly increases in January and February and most patients will recover by March.

Below are symptoms of Flu:

・Runny Nose

・Sore Throat

・Body aches

It doesn’t mean that you would have all the symptoms above. For example, patients may have sore throat and runny nose but no body aches or fever.

It is difficult to distinguish the flu from other virus illness. If you suspect it’s flu, go see a doctor and take a good rest.

How to Prevent Influenza

The best way is to get a vaccine every year.

Also it’s recommended to be away from sick individuals. When you cough and sneeze, cover your nose and mouth. You should also wash hands frequently so that you won’t keep germs on your hands.

Vaccine will be in effect after 2 weeks you get it and lasts up to 5 months. If you decide to get a vaccine, it’s better to do in November so it will protect you against virus until March.

Flu virus is difficult to prevent completely in a crowded area such as school, office, stations and any other public places. In such places, it might be a good idea to wear a face mask because it reduces exposure to influenza virus.

Mask also protect you from dryness so it’s great to wear during winter.

I’m sure you’ve seen a lot of people wearing a face mask in Japan! (especially in cities like Tokyo.)

How to Recover from Flu

Patients are distributed antiviral drugs to recover from Influenza. Antiviral could be taken as liquid, pills, powder or intravenous solution.

Most healthy adults will recover several days after their influenza virus becomes active. Some, however, may take longer to recover.

For instance, children may take longer time than adults and some people may develop complication due to flu virus.

Symptoms of Influenza are similar to that of other virus illness. Its symptoms, however, usually are more severe and last longer.

Because it is hard to distinguish Flu from other illness, just go to see a doctor and see if you have Influenza virus.

Even after you get antiviral drugs, you might need to get Influenza vaccine to protect yourself. Antiviral drugs don’t work to prevent virus.
