Do you watch movies?
If you do, don’t forget to check “Your Name.” (kimino na-ha:君の名は 。)
It’s a big hit in Japan and it has been the highest grossing film since it was released at the end of August.
What is “Your Name.”?
The plot is developed between high school students.
Taki Tachibana, male student in Tokyo, one day wakes up and realizes he is somewhere in countryside.
The same thing happens to Mitsuha Miyamizu, female student in countryside.
She wakes up and she was in Tokyo.
Feeling something different and strange, they think it was dream and didn’t remember what had happened.
However, their friends tell them that they acted unusually the day before. It seems as if they have been transported into one another’s bodies.
They both try to remember what happened, but they have no clue.
Mistuha always wants to live in Tokyo. She wishes if she were a good-looking guy living in Tokyo.
Thus she enjoys spending time as Taki in Tokyo. Their dreams continue for a while and they communicate by leaving note.
One day they stop experiencing the dream. Taki tries to find real Mitsuha but something unexpected happens and…..

Why is it that Popular?

The “Your Name.” staff was initially planning to have less than 30 theatres to play the movie. After promotion, however, it has gained reputation and they increased up to 300 theaters instead.
It was released on August 26, 2016.
It’s been over a month and still keeps the highest grossing-film-position among Japanese movies.
Some people go watch twice or even three times. Why is it that popular?
The director, Makoto Shinkai, admits that “Your Name.” has been influenced by Haruki Murakami. Some Murakami fans would notice similarities while watching the movie.
Below are 3 reasons why young Japanese love “Your Name.”
1.Makes you Realize
What would you like to do if you were to die tomorrow?
You might have asked this question to someone or someone might have asked you. What would you do?
“Your Name.” makes young people realize happiness is not forever.
You might have accident, get laid off, big earthquake might hit your area, enormous comet might hit Japan tomorrow etc…..
You never know what is going to happen.
2. Looking for True Love
As mentioned in Young Japanese Don’t Date? a lot of young Japanese are single and looking for partners.
The plot is perfect for those young people.
Some singles don’t want to date, while others hope to find a soul mate.
It’s a fiction and unrealistic but people like to think “what if that happens to me…”
The story of Taki and Mitsuha attracts young audience because it’s unrealistic yet desirable.
3. No Memory
The last reason why the movie is so popular is that main characters lose memory and don’t remember what had happened.
This relates to smart phones and technology. Whatever young people do, they tend to use cell phones and computers. Study? They use computers.
They rarely write things down (although I personally like writing down!) and check on smart phones or computers and forget.
Just check and that’s all.
As shown in the movie, Taki and Mitsuha communicate via smart phones. For young generation, this is their lifestyle and it’s well written to describe modern Japanese culture.
Summary
“Your Name.” is still big hit in Japan and probably will keep the 1st position for a while.
Although I mentioned 3 reasons why Young Japanese love this movie, any generation will enjoy the movie for sure.
If you are in Japan, let’s go see the movie!
If you are outside Japan, let’s wait until it is released in your country (I love to watch but waiting).
